Public Speaking Tips
Tips for those who wish to become successful public speakers:
Pre-Delivery:
- Decide what your message is
- Brainstorm all of your ideas
- Pick out three key ideas you want your audience to take away with them
- Research your audience and their needs or expectations of you
- Find your own style of delivery
- Practice in front of a mirror
- Identify what looks most comfortable to you (your body language and sound of voice)
- Be truthful with yourself over what feels most natural to you when delivering a speech
- Practice in front of a trustworthy and honest group and be open to constructive feedback
Delivery:
- Scan the room and acknowledge your audience before you start speaking
- Take a deep breath and begin speaking slowly
- Ensure you know what part of your speech is coming next
- After each important point, pause and let the audience absorb your words
- Remember, your audience is willing you on to do well, they are not the enemy!
- Evaluate how YOU feel after you have made your speech
- Think about what the audience felt after your speech
- Reflect on what you did well and what you might want to improve on for next time
- Ask yourself if you achieved what you set out to do for your audience (ie. Persuade/Convince/Inform/Educate/Entertain)
- Don’t beat yourself up if you think it could have gone better, you probably did much better than you are giving yourself credit for!
