Public Speaking Tips

Tips for those who wish to become successful public speakers:

Pre-Delivery:

  • Decide what your message is
  • Brainstorm all of your ideas
  • Pick out three key ideas you want your audience to take away with them
  • Research your audience and their needs or expectations of you
  • Find your own style of delivery
  • Practice in front of a mirror
  • Identify what looks most comfortable to you (your body language and sound of voice)
  • Be truthful with yourself over what feels most natural to you when delivering a speech
  • Practice in front of a trustworthy and honest group and be open to constructive feedback

Delivery:

  • Scan the room and acknowledge your audience before you start speaking
  • Take a deep breath and begin speaking slowly
  • Ensure you know what part of your speech is coming next
  • After each important point, pause and let the audience absorb your words
  • Remember, your audience is willing you on to do well, they are not the enemy!
  • Post-Delivery:

    • Evaluate how YOU feel after you have made your speech
    • Think about what the audience felt after your speech
    • Reflect on what you did well and what you might want to improve on for next time
    • Ask yourself if you achieved what you set out to do for your audience (ie. Persuade/Convince/Inform/Educate/Entertain)
    • Don’t beat yourself up if you think it could have gone better, you probably did much better than you are giving yourself credit for!
